Drop Bears

tight sketch for Synergism in Illustration class project. Assignment was 'Fearsome critters'(look it up on wiki, lol). I chose to illustrate the Australian legend of Drop Bears, which are pretty much koalas with giant fangs, and claws, that wait in trees till hikers walk under them, then drop on the hikers, and rip out their throats. You can tell a drop bear is in a tree over you by laying on the ground, and spitting upwards. They'll spit back. ;)

my super sweet acrylic painting. 11"x36"
Fully rendered graphite drawing underneath, fixed, then painted over in true Don Brandes style. Yes, folks, that means I drew the patterns on walls, carpet, furniture, and tea accessories by hand, for better, or worse. This piece got into the Cosmix show at the Bradenton Museum of South Florida (or something like that), and is currently making it's rounds with the rest of the show to various galleries around the state of FL.

three hour ill (on an article about 'the Angel of Death,' a doctor who worked for the SS during WWII on increasing the chances of pregnancies producing twins, in an effort to produce an Arian army faster. After the fall of Germany, he escaped to Brazil, but seemed to have continued his research. Long story short there is a town in Brazil where, to this day, 8 out of 10 [my numbers might be off] pregnancies are twins.)

Example # 234 of Techonology Hating Me.

Our last project for Illustration 1 was an open assignment. HOO-RAH. I wanted to represent the major spells cast (in the musical version of Wicked), and take another opportunity to mess around with Painter. I was going to add in the 'ruby slippers,' but couldn't find a placement that didn't seem really awkward.BLAHBLAHBLAH




So the colors on this are CRAZY! Not at all what I started with. EVERYTIME I saved the file all of the colors would get washed out. I'd go back in, adding back where I could, and then BAM. Washed out even more. I don't get it. No matter what I saved it as the file still ended up getting modified without my consent. That bg color? That was once a nice golden yellow. I never changed it.





.....harumph.

For Intro to GIC we were to create a 2 posters for an event, one image-based, a one type-based. It was pretty funny presenting my idea to the class. No one had turned in their ideas ontime, but i had done thumbnails for mine, so the teacher took it to a class vote to decide if he'd let me slide or make me do the default MOMA poster. Thanks, class.
